Apocrypha Combatants - A Newhaven method of punishing delinquency - 1828
Two strapping fishwives chastise Henry Grey: one (left) holds him face down across one of their big baskets; the other (right) holds apart his Geneva gown and flogs him with a fish which she holds up by the tail. The former says: 'A man wha should hae been, an English Dominie, if fortune had nae smiled on him to speak o' our rank; and disparage a Villiage, which altho' I say it, is äqual in rank to oney town in a the World. For if we hae nae Nobility among us, we hae nae Beggars'. The other says: 'That will learn you how to taunt our goodmen, about their rank & education. I am sure there is nane in Newhaven sicken backbiters as ye are'. A third (left) watches the chastisement: 'Cob him weel Grizzy Flockhart! he is a pretty chap to speak o' abilities or rank, the Cheeping Skate! Wha's sermons for a the WarId are like banes without marrow. Most of us hae sense enough to tack care o' oursels, and that [sic] mair than he can say'. Grey's hair stands on end, but he keeps his mask-like smile; his arms are stretched out towards a book: 'Letters of Anglicanus [open at] Letter VI page 59 not raised in point of rank above Newhaven Fishermen'. Behind him (right) lies open the 'Christian Instructor January 1828. page 21. "Anglicanus somewhere speaks contemptuously of "the rank & Education of Newhaven fishermen" It is not their fault &c'. ['that in rank and education they are inferior to him . . . Contrasted, however, with the male and female Anglicanus, the fishers of both sexes in Newhaven are real ladies and gentlemen'.]. 1828 Hand-coloured lithograph
