Granite boulders on Boulders Beach, Simon's Town Table Mountain National Park Western Cape South Africa

“Boulder Beach on the west coast of False Bay is home to one of only three mainland nesting sites for the African Penguin. At this location the characteristic spheroidal shapes of granite boulders, the result of preferential weathering along intersecting fractures, is very obvious. The Cape Granite is a coarse-grained rock with large white or pink feldspar crystals, glassy brown quartz and flakes of black mica, with occasional inclusions of dark metamorphosed Malmesbury hornfels”.
