STEETLEY MAGNESITE IN MONO
One of the vast, but now derelict, settling tanks used to manufacture magnesium from sea water pumped in from the nearby North Sea. The largest tank, at 320 feet in diameter, could hold up to 8 million gallons of sea water. This image shows the collapsed bridge that gave access to the hub of the rake arms, used to rotate and circulate water within the tank. The site was operative from 1937 to 2005, and now proves a magnetic for photographers and mischievous kids alike. However, on this mid-summer's day, the weather in particular was anything but inviting.
