Arthroplasty: shoulder joint replacement. X-ray image showing the replacement of the head of the humerus, the bone of the upper arm. A shoulder joint replacement is performed when the joint is severely deformed due to an injury or to a disorder such as arthritis. The prosthetic implant has a ball-shaped head and a main body which is cemented into the shaft of the humerus. The incision has been stitched together using staples.
