The Basilica replaced a smaller, earlier church constructed in 1672. The main construction work took place between 1824 and 1829. The print shows the building prior to the construction of the towers. The sanctuary was completed in 1830, the first tower in 1841 and the second in 1843. On completion, the Cathedral was the largest in North America, which it remained for more than fifty years.
