Descbiption. — Wings long with three outer primaries (of adults) deeply notched and abruptly narrowed at tip; tail much longer than xdng and very deeply forked. Adult male: Top and sides of head (down to lower jaw) and back of neck black, a large, concealed crown-patch of bright yellow; back and scapulars light gray which becomes dark, dusky or blackish on upper tail-coverts; tail black, the outer tail-feather broadly edged white basally for about half its length; wings very dark grayish-brown, most of the coverts and flight-feathers edged hght gray or white; region of lower jaw and all under plumage including axillars and wing hnings whitish; inner webs of flight-feathers yellowish-white (broadly) at edges; bill black; iris dark brown; legs and feet brownish-black or black. Adult female: Similar to male or as male; but usually both yellow crown-patch and outer tail-feathers shorter. Young in juvenal plumage: Resembling adults, but tail much shorter, sometimes barely forked; black of head replaced by grayish-brown; black of tail duller than in adult; gray of upper plumage duller and more brown; outer three primaries not notched or emarginated; cap dusky or brownish with pale edges; darker and more brownish above than adults and edges of wing- coverts more brownish; no crown-patch. Measurements. — Length to in.; folded wing to ; tail to ; bill .55 to .70; tarsus about .65. Female usually smaller than male. Molts. — Juvenal plumage produced by complete postnatal molt in the nestling; first winter plumage acquired by an appar- ently complete post juvenal molt which appears to extend through winter, as molting specimens were found in December, January and February; probably a prenuptial molt also; in any case spring birds are as adult; adult has postnuptial and prenuptial molt, both of
