Sandstone carving sculpture in memory of those massacred during World war Two at Lidice near Prague Czech Republic Europe


In June 1942 the village of Lidice, north-west of Prague, was razed to the ground on the orders of Hitler, in revenge for the assassination of Nazi deputy Reinhard Heydrich. The village was falsely thought to have harboured the assassins, 2 Czech agents trained in the The women and children were sent to concentration camps in Poland. 17 children and a few women survived. The men were shot at dawn at a village farm. The survivors returned to Czechoslovakia after the war. This 1982 sandstone sculpture is one of a series that stands where the village once stood.
