Williams was born Janu-ar}- 2, 1840, on ship in the English Channelhigh seas He volunteered April 15, 1861,in Company- G, Eighth MassachusettsVolunteers, ■Minute Men of 61. out August 31, 1861. and immediatelyre-enlisted in the First MassachusettsBattery. Was promoted to Corporal,October 30, 1861, and to Sergeant Febru-arj, 1863, in campaign under GeneralBurnside ; and finally mustered out August29, 1865, at , \a., after closeof the Southern Rebellion. During thewar he participated in the following battles :Siege of Yorktown, Battle of Williamsburg,May 5, 1862; followed by ^^hitchouseLanding and Hanover Court House.
