The Palace of the Grand Master of the Knights of Rhodes built in the 7th century as a Byzantine citadel is nowadays a museum.
Rhodes is the largest of the Dodecanese Island in the Aegean Sea of Greece. Sometimes it is called The Island of the Knights because the Knights of Saint John of Jerusalem conquered the island in 1309 and ruled it until 1522. In this time they built magnificent buildings. Most impressive is the Palace of the Grand Master of the Knights of Rhodes originally built in the 7th century as a Byzantine citadel, converted by the Knights Hospitaller after 1309 to the palace of their Ottoman Empire used it again as a fortress and after Restoration under Italian rule in 1937 it became a castle for the Italian king and also the dictator Benito Mussolini. Nowadays it is a museum. Rhodos ist die Hauptinsel des Dodekanis in der Ägäis. Die Insel wurde 1309 von den Kreuzrittern erobert. Diese errichteten eine Reihe beeindruckender Gebäude bevor sie 1522 die Insel wieder verlassen mussten. Heute ist Rhodos einer der großen touristischen Zentren Griechenlands. Das wohl beeindruckenste Gebäude ist der Großmeisterpalsast. Im siebten Jahrhundert als byzantinische Festung erbaut, bauten die Kreuzritter es ab 1309 in den Palast für ihren Großmeister und ihre Regierungszentrale um. Unter der Herrschaft der Ottomanen wurde die Anlage wieder eine Festung, ab 1937 restaurierten die Italiener die Burg zu einem Schloss, in dem der italienische König und der Diktator Benito Mussolini residierten. Heute ist der Großmeisterpalast ein Museum.
