Tree huggers and environmentalists in Alexandra Park in Greater Manchester, where numerous campaigners held a protest. Protesters set up camp tents inside the secured area and built a campfire. Trees are being cut down in Alexandra Park, Whalley Range, as part of a £ million initiative by the city council to restore the park to its Victorian appearance.

The park was developed by the Manchester Corporation long before the area was incorporated into the city. Work started in late 2012 will lead to major improvements in the park. In this process 30 ha of the park (currently overgrown by over 400 mature ash trees) will be replanned. The newly created terrain will be used for cricket grounds, tennis courts, and sight lines through the park. The planned re-structuring of the park has raised critical voices in the local neighbourhood and in environmental circles and has been opposed with a petition and protest events. The council intends to fell 280 trees as part of a £ project to return the park to the way it is supposed to have looked in Victorian times.
