The volume of work done by the City Library during 1911was greater than that of any previous year. The wholeperiod was filled with activity and the small library forcewas almost daily compelled to work overtime. It may be interesting here to note that approximately 12,000orders for supplies were received from various departmentsduring the year, and were accordingly filled. The detail worknecessary to the proper conduct of the purchasing feature ofthis Department is extensive, but is so systematized that themachinery runs very smoothly. It is a matter worthy of note, too, that though hundredsof bills, representing thousands of purchases, were sent to theComptroller, not even a minor error was discovered. It isnot to be inferred from this statement that errors are expectedor that the
