He secluded himself from society andpursued a close study of scholastic philosophy andtheology. Matters came to a height in 1472 whenall Ferrara was immersed in a carnival of courtlypageants and civic festivities. Then the youngstudent wrote a treatise entitled Contempt of theWorld, left his home without the knowledge of his 41 Bezas Portraits of Reformers relatives, went to Bologna, and there entered themonastery of St. Dominic.
