Although much of the script for Thai Sak Yan is actually Khmer, the tradition of 'protection' tattoos in Cambodia itself is dying out. Many soldiers in the non Khmer Rouge factions had 'Sak Yoan' and these days they are associated with a painful past that the new generations want to leave behind. This contrasts with Thailand where 'Sak Yan' are increasingly popular and fashionable.
