Koblenz, Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany: Jesus Christ slumps on the cross, flanked by the Virgin Mary and St John the Evangelist, in this vivid early 14th century stained glass Crucifixion roundel, one of several depicting scenes from the Passion in the Florinskirche or Church of St Florian. The Florinskirche was founded in about 1100 AD, with a Gothic chancel added in 1350. The building has survived a tumultuous history, which has included being burned by the French in 1688 and being used to store munitions between 1794 and 1807, during the Napoleonic era. It was reopened as a Protestant or Evangelical church in 1820 and was renovated in 1824, only to be badly damaged by Allied bombs in 1944, during World War II. Much of the structure had to be rebuilt between 1950 and 1957. This roundel was amongst medieval stained glass donated to the Florinskirche in 1819-20, ready for its reconsecration as a Protestant church. It was probably originally in the church at Dausenau, a small town on the River Lahn about 20 kilometres east of Koblenz.
