Filaments aline in height, flexuous, often very much curled, subulate, tapering to amore or less acute point, crowded, tufted, the tufts glued together at thebase by a slimy matter, simple. Stria sometimes indistinct; sometimeswell-defined and very close. Colour, under the microscope, a dull, yellowishgreen. This forms slimy patches, very treacherous to unwary feet, onthe surface of rocks near high-water mark, often growing inplaces where it is only wet by the splashing of the sea, or onlycovered at spring tides, and where it is much within the influenceof rain. It is found on all our shores, on rocks of every geo-logical character indifferently, and is probably to be met with insimilar situations all over the world. It was first detected inSweden, by Weber and Mohr, and introduced to the notice ofBritish botanists by Mr. Dillwyn. B. Fig. 1. Calothrix scopulorum.
