Illustration for a Sonnet to "Ailsa Craig" by John Keats. Ailsa Craig is an island in the outer Firth of Clyde, 16 kilometres (10 miles) west of mainland Scotland. Colloquially known as "Paddy's milestone",it was a haven for Catholics during the Scottish Reformation in the 16th century. John Keats (1795–1821) was an English Romantic poet, one of the main figures of the second generation of Romantic poets, along with Lord Byron and Percy Bysshe Shelley, before his death from tuberculosis at the age of 25.
