Firework explosion, coloured shadowgraph. Shadowgraphy is a type of flow visualisation, similar to but simpler than schlieren photography. Disturbances in an air flow can be seen by the shadows they cast. Here, a cloud of gases and particles and a spherical blast wave have been produced by the explosion of a small firecracker suspended on a string. The cardboard shell of the firecracker has blown outwards at both ends, with a bright flash. The smoke is from the burning fuse before the explosion.
