The Battle of Hampton Roads ( also Battle of the Monitor and Virginia or the Battle of Ironclads) was a battle in the American Civil War fought on 8-9th March 1862 in the Hampton Roads sea lanes. It was the first naval battle between modern metal ships instead of wooden sailing ships. The vulnerability of wooden ships was obvious to all and the battle marks the start of the dreadnought age. This image depicts the CSS Virginia (rechristened USS Merrimac) fighting with the USS Monitor.
