Amazingly decorated with bright mosaics, this church is the only one of Rome's five great ancient basilicas that has preserved its structure since the beginnings of Christendom. Also, along with four other churches, they enjoy the privilege of papal sovereignty. Santa Maria Maggiore is considered by many to be the most beautiful church in Rome after St. Peter. This basilica still retains its old look and the interior is dominated by mosaics representative of Paleocene art. We see the special paintings, we notice the incredibly designed ceiling, we see the benches that people place when they come to the religious service, we see places specially created for the mystery of confession.
