NovoSeven clotting protein, molecular model. NovoSeven is the brand name for an artificial version of the natural blood protein Factor VII, or proconvertin. This is an enzyme involved in the coagulation cascade, the physiological process that leads to blood clotting in the case of an injury. NovoSeven is produced by genetically modified bacteria, which have had the gene coding for the Factor VII protein added to their genome. NovoSeven has been used to stop blood flow in wounded soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan by US and UK forces. This was controversial as its use had not been approved at the time. The primary (coloured rods) and secondary (ribbons) structures of the protein are both seen.
