Boiler. Since it is necessary to have a high-grade, durable, andeconomical boiler in order to have an efficient and reliable machine,it is thought advisable to call especial attention to the type of boil-ers used in this connection and point out some of their good and badfeatures. It was mentioned in the description of the traction engine,Fig. 40, that a locomotive type of boiler with some modifications wasused. Fig. 43 illustrates such a boiler. It is of the fire tube horizon-. Fig. 43. Traction Boiler of the Locomotive Type tal type. The fire box i is of a horizontal rectangular constructionwith open grate bars 2 and ash pit 3, below. The fuel, either woodor coal, is fed through the fire door 5, and the ash is removed throughthe door 4- The products of combustion, such as smoke, hot gases, etc., pass through the tubes 10 into the front end IS, from whencethey are exhausted through the opening IS and the smoke stack intothe atmosphere. If straw is to be used as fuel, a brick arch is placedin the fire box which deflects the gases toward the fire door so that, after passing over the arch, they are drawn out through the tubesin the usual manner. It is also necessary to put in different gratebars where straw is used, as the bars must be closer together so thefuel will not drop through into the ash pan. STEAM ENGINES 57 It will be noted that the fire box is surrounded by water
