Richardson, with a few more or less threateningencounters with the Eskimos, ending fairly well owingto Ooligbuck, and in constant danger of wreck avoidedby careful navigation, rounded Cape Bathurst in 70° 36and discovered Wollaston Land, the coast-line of which. To face page 15S RICHARDSONS JOURNEY 159 they left continuing to the east, when they reachedCoronation Gulf and, on the 8th of August, enteredthe Coppermine, and thus filled in the gap of ninehundred and two statute miles from Point the Dolphin and Union at Bloody Fall on thatriver, it being impossible to take them further, theexpedition, carrying the Walnut Shell with them, pro-ceeded along the banks, but finding they had no usefor the portable boat, owing to the shallowness of thestream, they soon abandoned it, and in 67° 13, wherethe river is nearest to the north-eastern arm of GreatBear Lake, the Coppermine was left and the courselaid across the Barren Grounds for Dease River. Thiswas reached three days afterwards, Richardson beingmet at its mouth by Deases people on the 24th ofAugust.
