Colour running during washing. Clothes in a washing machine showing that colour has run (migrated) from the dark blue garment, colouring the other items blue. Colour running may occur for a number of reasons. For example, if too much dye has been used in the initial dyeing process, or if the dye has not been fixed properly, then hot water in the machine may wash it out. Other clothes in the washing machine at the same time may then absorb the dye, causing their colour to change. The problem is most pronounced when there is a high level of contrast between the original colour and the migrated dye.
