Willard Parker (1800-1884), US surgeon. Parker obtained his medical degree from Harvard (1830), and worked in the USA and Europe before being appointed professor of surgery in New York (1839), where he remained for the rest of his career. He made advances in several areas of surgery, including bladder operations, and also advanced clinical teaching practices and helped found public health organisations. This photograph is from the Bain News Service, one of the USA's earliest news picture libraries.
