Marconi and radio at South Foreland. Italian physicist and inventor Guglielmo Marconi (right, 1874-1937) operating his radio at the South Foreland lighthouse on the southern coast of England in 1898. At left is his assistant George Kemp. Marconi carried out the first transmissions of radio messages across the sea, communicating with a lightship several kilometres away, and later successfully communicating across the English Channel to Boulogne in France.
