Black garden ant (Lasius niger), coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM). This ant is found throughout Europe, Asia and parts of North America. Like other ants, it has two long antennae on its head, used for tasting chemicals to detect food and follow trails left by other ants. It also has two compound eyes (red). Magnification: x30 when printed 10cm wide.
