A treatise on citrus culture in CaliforniaWith a description of the best varieties grown in the state, and varieties grown in other states and foreign countries, gathering, packing, curing, pruning, budding, diseases, etc . ow at will for severalyears before they are pruned, most of the inside brush will befound to be dead, and to remove it requires considerable workand skill, for if in removing a branch a hole is made that willallow the hot sun to enter, it will scorch the bark; the finebrush will also die, and diseased trees are sure to be the have often read articles wherein the writers advocate, thatthe trees be opened so as to allow plenty of air and sun-heatto enter. This advice comes from men having no practicalknowledge; men who are ever willing to tell, but who cannotdo it themselves. I am sure that no one having an orchard, depending upon that alone for a livelihood, would ever followor give such advice. It is not practical and should be disre-garded. Figure No. 14 is a good illustration of how a tree is left, orwhat remains of it, after the brush that protects the trunk andbranches is removed. The trunk and inside growth is leftexposed to the suns heat. 62 CITRUS CULTURE IN Figure No. 14. I have often seen trees where the bark had been scorchedand had dried on the south side of the tree, being the resultof removing the brush that protected it. Figure No. 15 illustrates a high trained tree of the same age.
