Broken Stone vs. Gravel. Broken stone very often gives less satisfaction than gravel, because thelatter binds quickly under traffic owing to the presence of sand and clay. Toget the best service from broken stone a road roller should be used to consoli-date it ; otherwise the stone will roll loosely for a considerable length of time. 40 REPORT ON 31. Stone Road, Simcoe County. The feeling of councils with regard to its iise is that it makes a passable roadfor a short time in fall and spring, but that a good dirt road for summer useis spoiled. Townships which have only broken stone for road metal willreceive decided benefit from the use of a steam or horse road roller, whichwill at once consolidate the stone, and make a thoroughly good and smoothroad for all seasons of the year. There must be a sufficient body of brokenstone to consolidate into a compact layer. A sprinkling of stones over thethe surface is useless. It merely impedes travel on what might otherwise bea good dirt road. Six inches of broken stone is the least which should beused in making a durable roadway for any purpose, and it should be the aimof councils to thicken this covering as circumstances will permit.
