Foetal ovarian tissue. Light micrograph of a section through tissue from an ovary from a foetus. The ovary is the reproductive structure that produces the female sex cells (ova). A woman's supply of ova start developing at the time the ovaries form in the foetus during pregnancy. Development is then arrested and the cells remain in a resting state until hormones prompt further development. This process of ovulation and maturation and release of a single ovum takes place on a roughly monthly cycle following sexual maturity.
