Franks note onthis subject is interesting, andwe are permitted to quote it: The peculiarity of the Kau-ri pine is that the trunk does notappear to diminish in size fromthe ground to where the hmbsbegin to spread. We saw sometrees more than two hundredfeet high; they were eight ornine feet in diameter at the base, and had no limbs within forty orfifty feet of the ground. Theyreminded us of the famous big-trees of California, but were tall-er in proportion to their diame-ter. We dont think we eversaw more graceful trees any-where. They haven t a greatdeal of foliage, and it grows in little tufts very much like bushes. The wood is full of gum, and is very valuable as timber. Theytold us it was the finest wood in the world for shingles, as the gum pre-served it from the effects of the weather. A great deal of the lumberfrom the Kauri pine is shipped to other parts of New Zealand, and alsoto Australia, China, Feejee, and other places where it can find a K.;^ KAURI PINE. 200 THE BOY TRAVELLERS IN AUSTRALASIA.
