In the first test the fire was started in car No. 200, locatedexactly in the center of the house, and in a manner similar tothat in which fires usually originate in cars, viz: by means of ashort-circuit. Two arc light carbons were connected to themotor circuit, and a piece of fuse wire was placed between thetwo carbons, which were about an inch apart. The carbons. EXTERIOR OF SECOND CAR were placed beneath a seat, and when the current was turnedon the fuse melted and an arc was formed, which speedily setfire to the seats. In three minutes the interior of the car wasin flames and the windows on the sides and transoms com-menced to break. Within three minutes from the time the firstsprinkler was opened the fire, both inside and outside, was en-tirely extinguished. Twenty-seven sprinklers were opened inthis test. The second test was even more severe, as it was started frombelow the car floor; car 198, located directly in front of thefirst car, being used.
