The third link of the pedigree is established by undoubteddocumentary evidence, to wit, a charter of confirmation by KingWilliam the Lion, in 1169, to Philip de Seton, of the lands of. Seton, Winton, and Winchburgh, previously held by hisfather Seher. This is one of the oldest Scottish charters in ALEXANDER DE SETON 69 existence, and it is now in the posses-sion of the Earl of Mostof the lands which it conveys con-tinued in the possession of Philipsdescendants till the forfeiture of thefifth Earl of Winton, in 1716— upon five and a half married Alice (or Helen)daughter of Waldeve, Earl of Dunbar,and is said to have died in thefourteenth year of the reign of KingWilliam (1179), when he was suc-ceeded by his son Alexander.
