USS Hornet with Apollo astronauts. Aerial photograph of the aircraft carrier USS Hornet (CV-12) on which US President Richard Nixon is welcoming the Apollo 11 astronauts back to Earth. The three astronauts (Armstrong, Aldrin and Collins) were confined in a Mobile Quarantine Facility following their return from the Moon. The command module (Columbia) landed in the Pacific on 24 July 1969. Following decontamination procedures, the three astronauts were placed in quarantine for 18 days until 10 August 1969.
