The designof the hood represents the Madonna enthroned with the Childon her knees. The orphreys-—eight in number—include thefollowing subjects, in order from the left — a bishop withcrozier: a female saint with palm branch; an old man bearinga book; another with a cross and orb; Madonna and Child; asaint with scimitar or knife, probably St. Bartholomew; and bearing a cup from which a winged serpent issues, inmemory of the legend that he once dnmk with impunity from apoisoned chalice, after making the sign of the cross over it. Length, fl feet 10 inches ; width, 54 inches. 114—Splendid Embroidered Frontal Spanish. Early Eighteenth Century. The crimson surfaceof fine old Venetian velvet displays a top border, two lateralborders and the main field, all of which are embellished withmedallions in needle painting, set in the midst of a sumptuousdesign of scrollwork. The climax of the whole scheme is alarge circular picture of the Annunciation, which occupies thecenter of the main field. It is enclosed in an elaborate frame ofscrollwork of afpHpti silk in two colors, white shaded with bluepigment and eofe-aii-lait shaded with green. On each side ofthis main design the space is occupied with a bold design ofacanthus scrolls, distinguished by the free flow of their curvesand the choiceness of the foliage details.
