All kinds of stock, especially dairy cattle, are fond of it both cured and green. The hay is not so merchantable as Tim- othy, but is of better quality and seems to draw less heavily upon the strength of the soil. The particular usefulness of Red Top lies in its ability to thrive on lowlands, even those which are subject to an oc- casional overflow, and mixtures Of grasses for such situations should always contain a large proportion of it. Its name is derived from the panicle of purplish flowers which it produces. For those who prefer it we have the fancy cleaned seed, which is separated from all the chaff, and therefore much more easily sown, eight pounds per acre being sufficient. Price variable. (Dactylis Glomerata.)— Orchard Grass, known also as Cocksfoot, is par excellence the grass for the South, as it |f succeeds on almost all soils, makes a growth early in the spring, and continues to yield into winter. Like most rapidlv-orowins Orchard Craw plants, it is rather coarse if allowed to stand too 1 ong, but if kept closely grazed, it has alwavs a fresh, green color, and is keenly relished by all kinds of stock. It is less exhaustive to land than Timothy, and will endure considerable shade, being for this reason particularly adapted to orchards" or similar situations.
