Chickenpox blisters on an eight year old boy's face. Chickenpox, or varicella, is caused by infection with the herpesvirus varicella-zoster. It is a common infectious disease of childhood that causes headache and fever, followed by the eruption of a rash over most of the body. The rash appears in crops and consists of clusters of small, red, itchy spots that become fluid-filled blisters within a few hours. Calamine lotion (a zinc-based anti-itching lotion) can be used to soothe the skin until the disease clears up.
