THE work of installing the power plants for thegreat exhibit buildings is going actively forward, and our illustration shows something of the pres-ent advance in the boiler work. Of those now being set, THE CAMPBELL & ZELL COMPANY, the well known boiler makers of Baltimore, and whoseChicago representative is W. A. Ross, Rookery Building, are erecting seven boilers of 300-horse-power each, andtwo of 200-horse-power each;—a total of 2,500-horse-power. They will be set in four batteries of two boilerseach and one boiler singly. The characteristic featuresof the Zell boiler are that the steam is all taken from thefront end of the inclined water drums, where it is passed. back through superheating tubes in the steam drum atthe rear, thus utilizing all the gases and heat which aregenerated in the boiler for re-evaporating and superheat-ing all the steam as it passes from the front end of thewater drums back to the steam drum. By inclining the water drums at the same angle as thetubes, and taking off all the steam at the front end ofthe water drums, and by introducing the feed water atback end of water drums directly over the vertical con-nection through the heaters, a perfect and rapid circula-tion is obtained, depositing all the sediment in the boilerthrough the feed water, into the mud drum first, andthus avoiding the liability of forming sediment and depositin the tubes, to a great extent. The boiler is purely sec-tional, onljr four tubes being used in each header, thussecuring the largest factor of safety in the headers. Byconnecting the headers together vertically, with wroughtiron nipples, insures the elasticity of the wrought iron inthe nipples a
