Roger Williams is welcomed by the Narragansetts, from whom he secured land and founded Providence Plantation in Rhode Island.
English Protestant theologian Roger Williams (died 1683) founded the Colony of Providence Plantation after fleeing religious persecution by the Massachusetts Bay Colony. He first had gone to the Wampanoag and the chief Massasoit, but later had to leave Massachusetts. He then went to Canonicus and Miantonomi chief sachems of the Narragansetts, who befriended him. Williams is shown in this 1898 illustration landing and being welcomed by the Narragansetts. Williams secured land from them and founded Providence Plantation in Rhode Island.
