Satellite image of Riyadh (upper centre), the capital city of Saudi Arabia, in 1979. North is at top. At this time the population of the city was over 760,000 and increasing rapidly. To the south and west of the city is the Wadi (valley) Hanifa (dark green), which the city is starting to spread across. The dark green areas at bottom right are irrigated fields. Image obtained by the multispectral scanner (MSS) on the Landsat 3 satellite on 15th September 1979. For images showing the growth of Riyadh from 1979 to 2016 see C036/8226 to C036/8230.
