Fisherman selling fresh whale-meat to residents at Godharn Bay, Spitsbergen in 1967. The meat is almost certainly from small Beluga whales and the small fishing vessels are registered in Greenland. The locals have arrived by sleds pulled by huskys. Spitsbergen (formerly West Spitsbergen, Vest Spitsbergen or Vestspitsbergen or Spitzbergen) is the largest and only permanently populated island of the Svalbard archipelago in northern Norway. First used as a whaling base in the 17th and 18th centuries and this bay was originally named Lievely. This image is from an old amateur colour transparency.

The locals have arrived by sleds pulled by huskys. Spitsbergen (formerly West Spitsbergen, Vest Spitsbergen or Vestspitsbergen and also sometimes spelled Spitzbergen) is the largest and only permanently populated island of the Svalbard archipelago in northern Norway. Constituting the westernmost bulk of the archipelago, it borders the Arctic Ocean, the Norwegian Sea, and the Greenland Sea. The island was first used as a whaling base in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries and this bay was originally named Lievely. This image is from an old amateur colour transparency. It will look soft and grainy if used at too large a size – a vintage 1960s photograph.
