Near the sum-mit of the Cas-cade Mountains,about sixty-fivemiles north ofthe Oregon-Cali-fornia line, isCrater Lake, in the heart of one of the most interestingmountainous forest regions of the state. It occupies theabyss of an extinct volcano, six thousand feet above thesea, and is encircled by about twenty miles of precipitouswalls that rise from five hundred to two thousand feet abovethe water. At no point is there a breach in the plunge right down into the depths of the lake, andthough the lake has no known inlet or outlet yet the wateris pure and excellent to drink.
