Each man in the company had a blood-red streak around his neck, and it was composed of his ownblood, too. An inspection of our quarters was held at once,and though the slaughter of the night had been terrible, therewere yet millions left. The rough ends of each bunk-boardwas red with bugs, and there was not a crack nor crevice of theold rookery that did not hold its thousands.
