Fool's parsley fruit. Light micrograph of a section through the fruit (cremocarp) of a fool's parsley (Aethusa cynapium) plant. The fruit wall (pericarp) has ten ridges (costae) that enclose two seeds (red-orange, oval), each of which is in a separate half (mericarp). Each ridge has a vascular bundle and peripheral supporting fibres under the epidermis. In between the ridges are furrows (valleculae) and at bottom of each furrow is an oil duct (vitta). The seed wall (testa) encloses the food store (endosperm) around the embryo (not shown). In-between the central gap separating the seeds, are two stalks (small ovals), which are attached to the top of the mericarps. Magnification: x13, when printed 10 centimetres wide.
