There is a branch of this race in Switzer-land with arms not at all like those given above. There is another branch in Italy whoare Marquises and Knights of the Anonciade. They bear azure three tiles argent asa shield of pretense on their own arms to denote their descent from the original family. FORAS FAMILY. THE family of Foras is one of the knightly houses whose nobility isimmemorial in the Duchy of Savoie. It is mentioned in authenticdeeds of the thirteenth century and figures and is styled one of themust distinguished Families of the Duchy in the Preuves Chapitrates forthe Order of Malta. Barle or Berlion de Foras was one of the Knights ofthe Collier (now the Annonciade) who founded this celebrated order in. 1362. Rudolph de Foras was commander of the Order of Malta from 1368to 1379. Seated originally in Genevois, the family emigrated in the fourteenth cen-tury to the Chateau de Foras sous Ballyson (Haute Savoie) which wasdestroyed in 1687 and from that time it established itself in the Chateaude Thuyset, near Thonon. Among other distinguished modern membersof the family may be mentioned General Joseph Marie de Foras and the Foras Family 377 very learned Count Amedee de Foras, Knight of St. John of Jerusalem(Malta), Commander of SS. Maurice and Lazare and of the Order ofChrist, Knight of the Holy Sepulchre, Grand Marshall
