MYXEDEMA, HEART X-RAY
Myxedema, caused by hypothyroidism, is characterized by subcutaneous infiltrations and swelling of the face and members. When present in newborns, it is known as congenital myxedema. It can occur in adults following an illness involving the thyroid gland. The lack of thyroid hormones causes a number of disorders. In children, symptoms include a lack of normal growth and a disproportionate head size. Treatment includes lifetime administration of substitution thyroid hormones. Shown here, enlarged heart.
