NASA drilling in the desert country of south-central Nevada, USA in 1966, which involved searching for suitable sites to be used for testing and storage. Here men operate the rig and drill bits are seen in the foreground. In the early 1960s the Atomic Energy Commission (AEC) and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) established a test complex at the Nevada Test Site (NTS), the Nuclear Rocket Development Station (NRDS). Nuclear reactors and engine systems were tested here. There were also shallow-land burial radioactive waste disposal units – a vintage 1960s photograph.

Here men operate the rig and drill bits are seen in the foreground. In the early 1960s the Atomic Energy Commission (AEC) and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) established a test complex at the Nevada Test Site (NTS) called the Nuclear Rocket Development Station (NRDS). A railroad transported nuclear reactors and engine systems from rocket and engine assembly buildings to the test sites (cells). The NRDS also operated shallow-land burial radioactive waste disposal units. This image is from a worker’s old amateur Kodak colour transparency. It will look soft if used at too large a size – a vintage 1960s photograph.
