Chalkwell, Southend on Sea, Essex, UK. 9th Dec, 2021. A steam train has left Southend on Sea heading to Oxford for their Christmas Market and carol service, passing alongside the Thames at Chalkwell. The Steam Dreams organised special train is being hauled by ex British Rail LMS Stanier Black Five steam locomotive number 44871, which was built in 1945 and one of the last to operate passenger services before the removal of steam from Britain’s railways in 1968. 44871 is one of a small number of steam locomotives cleared to run on mainlines for special trips
