Mount Gamalama erupting. Historical artwork of Mount Gamalama volcano on the eastern Indonesian island of Ternate erupting. In the foreground ships are seen in the Molucca Sea. The volcano, whose summit is 1715 metres above sea level, is still active. Ternate was the main producer of the spice cloves, which were once worth their weight in gold, until the late 18th Century. From a book of 1788.
