Maker: John Coney, American, 1655–1722, Monteith, ca. 1705, Silver, 8 5/8 in., lb. ( cm, 50 oz.), John Coney was the leading silversmith in Boston in the period from about 1700 until his death in 1721, a time when the town was the major center of silversmithing in Britain’s North American colonies. This monteith was made for the wealthy Boston merchant John Colman. In the late seventeenth century, when the fashion for serving wines cold arose, monteiths came into fashion as vessels for chilling wine glasses.
