Phipps Lake was born in Windom, Herkimer county, July 19, 1818. Hewas a son of David Lake, Esq. His father moved from Windom toHamburg, Erie county, when Phipps was about three years of age. Hereceived his education in the district school of this place and learned the tradeof a shoemaker, which he followed until his marriage with Rebecca Jaques in1841. He then commenced the study of medicine with Dr. Davis, of EdenCenter, N. Y., supporting himself and family by working at his trade. Hegraduated, receiving the degree of Doctor of Medicine from an eclectic schoolin Cincinnati, Ohio, in 1848, and began the practice of his chosen professionin Gowanda the following year. In 1855 he changed his residence to remaining at this place for four years he removed to North Evans,returning in i860 to Otto, which town remained his home until his Medical Practitioners in Otto. 163 Although a graduate of an eclectic school he never followed any exclusivesystem of practice, and in 1873 he joined the Cattaraugus County MedicalSociety. In 1861 he enlisted in the 64th N. Y. Vols., of which regiment he hadpreviously been surgeon, having vacated the position by his removal from theregimental district. While the regiment was in barracks at Elmira he wasappointed sergeant-major, and in a few days was commissioned as first lieuten-ant of Co. D, being promoted captain when the regiment reached health became seriously impaired after about one year in the service andhe was compelled to resigii. After his return he was appointed medicalexaminer of recruits, which position he filled for two years, and after the com-pletion of his army service he resumed the practice of medicine, but theaffection of the heart, originating during his army life, had slowly
